Metal Carports and Covers

For 20 years Metalink has built steel carports and covers in Central Texas. Experience and long term results has demonstrated that our steel structures are the best protection against the severe storms and harsh climate we endure every year throughout our region. A steel structure is stronger than aluminum and more durable than wood. Combined with commercial grade roof panels, our structures are designed to provide decades of protection with very little maintenance.

Types of Carports and Covers

The types of covers we build include carports (both single or multiple-bay), shade areas for playgrounds and schools, covered walkways, patio covers, equipment and machinery covers, awnings, large covers for loading docks, and the list goes on. If you need protection from the weather or want to protect your investment, give us a call or shoot us a request. We don’t sell or install the $500 kits you see along the roadside. Our covers are built to last; set deep in concrete footers or anchored with steel bolts to a slab. We also install RV covers.

Commercial Carports

In the commercial market, our structures are often utilized to provide covered parking for staff or apartment residents. Having covered areas available is a perk that makes a real impact in retaining employees or attracting residents.

Residential Carports

In the residential setting, a metal carport can provide your car (and yourself) protection from the elements when there just isn’t enough garage space for all of your vehicles. Keep your car protected from the next hail storm and save yourself the hassle of insurance claims. Construction Detail

Our frames (trusses, posts, and gables) are fabricated using steel purlins, square tubing, and channel. The size and type of material depends entirely upon the size of the structure it will support. At our facility in South Austin, we have a fully equipped fabrication shop so are able to build any size frame or gable needed for your project. We use both red oxide and galvanized, with the latter being our most popular due to it’s resistance to rust. We are also able to powder coat the frame to compliment (or closely match) the roof color. In many cases our customers prefer to powder coat only the posts (as they are the most visible) and leave the purlins in their galvanized state. Powder coating is often preferred to painting – it looks better and has a much nicer finish, is comparable to wet paint in price, and lasts a lot longer than conventional painting.

For the Do-it-Yourself Types

Although we typically quote a turnkey project – from fabrication to installation – we often are asked to provide a quote for material only. We refer these customers to roofing suppliers or other companies that provide “kits.” However, if your project requires a custom size truss, posts with plates welded to the bottom, custom brackets or gussets, or even a design element (such as decorative scrolls) added to the frame, let us know. We can help turn the ordinary into something spectacular. Bring your ideas to us.

Types of Covers: Our Basic Carport Types:

AS Style - the most simple of the flat roof design. This style is often seen in apartment complexes as they are often the most economical. They can range from a single stand alone unit to a multiple-bay (ranging in dozens) covered parking. The 7.2 Rib roof panel is required for this style.

FR Style - This style is similar to the AS style but has more framing in the roof structure. This allows for more choices of roofing panels.

GR - This is the gabled roof style, most popular with homeowners. It compliments many gable style homes or buildings.

CL – Center Post - This style has a large center post (typically two purlins welded together) and cantilevers out to the edges. This design eliminates the need for a post in every corner and at the same time provides a very strong and sturdy structure.

CL – Offset - This is the “beefiest” of all styles. The posts (double purlins welded together) are set deep in concrete to allow the support frame to cantilever out in one direction. The offset placement of the post provides for the best use of space and gives a more open design. No worries about hitting your car door on a post.

The above types include most of the carports we build and install, but often an architect, builder or homeowner wants a unique design. Send your ideas, plans, or drawing to us and we’ll work with you on planning a budget and helping you get your project moving forward.

Other Types of Covers we’ve installed:

Shade for bleacher seating * cluster mailbox cover * walkways * window and door awnings * equipment covers * boat & RV covers * employee break/smoke cover * loading dock covers * pool cabana

Roof Panels

Although we offer any commercially available product, for most projects we prefer to use panels that have TDI (Texas Department of Insurance) Windstorm ratings. These panels include:

  • Frontier Rib - This popular style has a low profile, making it a great option for most homeowners.
  • R Panel - A higher profile used on many steel buildings, both commercial and residential.
  • 7.2 Rib - Highest profile and used when needing to span 10′ without support. An excellent choice for carports and patio covers.

In some cases (within 80 miles of the coastline) TDI rated panels may be required for insurance purposes.

Color Choices

Color options are almost unlimited but popular choices are: Desert Sand, Ocean Blue, Polar White, Ash Gray, Charcoal Gray, Light Stone, Tan, Rustic Red

Permits for Carports

Most structures located within city limits require some sort of permit. It varies from city to city, so please check your local planning and development center to ensure compliance.
